Don’t you just hate it when you are in the mood for some healthy, scrumptious salad and discover that the fresh vegetables you had kept away have all gone bad? The lettuce is browning, the tomatoes have developed mold and the carrots have become slimy.
It can be frustrating, but it’s not the end of the world. There are several ways you can keep your food fresh just by following these simple steps.
Buy what you need
The first thing to consider, especially with fresh perishables is to buy only what you require at a go. The best scenario is to only buy what you know you will consume within 3 to 5 days. This will help ensure that none of it goes to waste.
If you do intend to keep them stored for longer, always have a plan on hand. A good freezing unit will help store the items under suitable temperatures and keep them fresher for longer.
Always wash your foodstuff
No matter when or where you buy your veggies, it is always a good idea to wash them thoroughly under running water before use or storage. Washing them helps remove any bits of dirt, tiny insect or other foreign elements that may cause them to deteriorate faster.
Do not wash fruit, vegetables or any other food items with soap or detergents. Simply running them under cold water is sufficient. Remove and discard any damaged or spoilt portions as you wash and sort them.
Repeat the process as many times as you can till you are sure any foreign material has been removed.
Timing is key
The earlier you stored your perishable foods the better. Especially when it comes to fruits and vegetables.
After going to the market and transporting the items through the sweltering heat, it’s always best to put them away as soon as possible. It’s always best to refrigerate your perishable foods within 1-2hours after buying them in temperatures under 32 degrees Celsius.
Right Temperature for the Right Freshness
Not all food items need to be stored in the refrigerator. Some are best kept in a cool airy place; others should be kept well frozen. Knowing the difference will help you keep your foods in optimal condition and save you lots of money in the long run.
Some fruits and vegetables are best stored in the fridge in loosely wrapped containers which helps them keep fresh for up to 20days. Food items like fish, meat and poultry should be neatly wrapped or placed in a tight container and placed in the coldest parts of the fridge or freezer. Eggs and dairy products (milk, cheese, or yoghurt) should be kept in the part of the fridge which is not too cold and yet cool enough to maintain their integrity. If you want your foods to last longer, keep them under the right conditions. Afterall, they are called perishable foods because of the harmful bacteria that easily grow on them.
By following the right steps, you can show the best care to yourself and families by cooking the healthiest of meals made with fresh foods all the time.
